Cortisol is a chemical that is produced in the adrenal glands and is often used as a measure of the stress that the body is experiencing. Cortisol is known to be responsible for the burning of fat, in other words it burns the calories you consume and releases them into your bloodstream to be processed and stored. When a person's body has a high amount of Cortisol it means that their body is functioning at a high-stress level and your body needs to return to its 'normal' state before returning to a more balanced level of functioning. The body's normal state is being a fat-burning machine. As people age their bodies return to their youthful state but Cortisol is known to remain in the body for a long time, This explains why middle-aged and older people tend to have a longer period where they are overweight compared to younger people.

When a person is dealing with a large amount of Cortisol in the body, their body cannot return to its natural state as quickly as it would if there was less of the chemical. When a person is dealing with the stress of trying to lose weight or maintain a healthy weight their body's ability to burn fat slows, Cortisol production increases and weight are gained. However, when a person is suffering from the symptoms of Crohn's Disease their body is also having a huge impact on their weight gain. Crohn's Disease patients are known to deal with significant amounts of Cortisol and it has been found that their bodies have a very difficult time returning to their original healthy state.

Cortisol affects the brain directly by blocking receptors in the brain that acts as an alarm to any changes in the body. The effects of this hormone can have far-reaching effects on a person's mental health. People who suffer from depression will often have greater amounts of Cortisol built up within their bodies than those who do not suffer from depression. Depression can have effects on both the mind and body. Depression can also lead to mood swings, fatigue, irritability and can also lead to serious diseases like cancer and diabetes.

The second effect of high levels of Cortisol is that it can have an effect on a person's appetite. The hormone can increase the desire for food and also increases the feeling of hunger. This can cause people to feel uncontrollable cravings for certain foods which can lead to weight gain. This effect is only temporary however and the appetite soon returns to normal.

A third direct effect of high levels of Cortisol is that it can cause a person to gain excess fat around the stomach area. The effect is again only temporary as once a person's blood sugar level returns to normal the extra fat is slowly lost. However, this effect is one of the hardest to reverse as once the weight gain slows the person must return to their normal diet, usually reducing their calorie intake drastically to prevent the weight from gaining again. This can have a serious long-term effect on a person's health.

There are some Cortisol supplements available on the market that claim to counter these effects, but research has not proved these claims. It is also important to remember that these supplements are made from plant-based compounds and are therefore considered to be low in toxicity. Also, the amount of these hormones consumed by a person is limited to the recommended daily dosage. These factors all work together to ensure that Cortisol cannot have an adverse effect on a person's health.
