Body Changes During Pregnancy

Many women have body changes during pregnancy. Some of these changes are normal and actually decrease with time, while others are very worrying. What are some of these signs and what do they mean? There is no one single definition for every symptom you may experience but many pregnancy symptoms can be grouped into broad categories. The list below describes a few of the most common changes experienced by pregnant women.

Heart Rate: Heart rate varies considerably during a normal pregnancy. It even increases slightly during the last trimester of pregnancy, as your baby grows and the heart pumps more blood. Things such as heartburn, feeling short of breath or acid reflux usually are caused by the hormonal changes occurring in the digestive, cardiovascular and respiratory systems. Other signs and symptoms of pregnancy include morning sickness, constipation, vomiting, fatigue, light headedness, dry mouth, dizziness, sweating, and frequent urination.

Breastfeeding: Breastfeeding is a wonderful way to bonding with your baby, so it is not only important for you to bond with your husband but is also important for many pregnant women to experience breastfeeding. Breast milk provides the necessary nutrients for a growing child. However, breastfeeding is also a wonderful experience in its own right. Many women report that they get a better night's sleep nursing their babies. Lactation is always a higher risk for those who are giving birth, so taking care of yourself physically and mentally during this time will help you reduce your chances of developing issues later on in life.

Back Pain: The hormones, diet, weight gain, labor, and birth control all play a role in causing back pain during pregnancy. In fact, back pain is the second most common reason for doctor visits among pregnant women. One of the ways to relieve your back pain is to exercise. As your body increases its mass, your ligaments will stretch, allowing you greater flexibility. Exercising regularly will strengthen your ligaments, making them less susceptible to injury and pain.

Menopause: As your hormones change, your body will experience many changes as well. You may experience nausea, insomnia, hot flashes, mood swings, vaginal dryness, and may feel a lack of energy. All of these changes may come about as the body battles hormone changes that occur throughout your pregnancy. If you have not been taking good care of yourself, or if you have experienced any type of trauma to your body, you may experience some of these symptoms. Your doctor will be able to assist you in dealing with any hormonal changes that you may experience during your pregnancy, thus making you healthier for giving birth. This will also make you more aware of any potential problems that you may have as your body changes throughout your pregnancy.

The more you understand about your body during this time, the better prepared you will be to deal with any issues that arise. As your body temperature rises and falls, your muscles and ligaments will stretch, elongate, and relax. You will have greater flexibility in your joints, spine, and overall body. However, if you don't allow enough rest and nourishment to your body, or if you do not get the right amount of sleep, your body may not be able to properly adapt, and this may result in a disjointed pregnancy, high stress, or premature delivery.
